1. 📜 Ask for a Land Document (and Verify It)
Always request at least one of the following:

Excision document

Registered survey

Deed of assignment
Then verify them at the Land Registry or Surveyor General’s Office. Don’t just look — confirm.
2. 🧭 Use a Professional Surveyor
A licensed surveyor can:

Chart the land on official records

Tell if it falls under committed or acquired government land

Reveal if it’s in a government “no-go” area
Costly? Maybe. But cheaper than buying a problem.
3. 📍 Visit the Land Physically
Look around:

Are there government signs like “Keep Off: Government Land”?

Is the land fenced or occupied by a public agency?

Are there bulldozers or red markings?
Don’t rely only on pictures or agent talk. Go there.
4. 📞 Call the Local CDA or Community Head
Community Development Associations (CDAs) usually know if:

Government has plans for the area

There’s any history of demolition
They won’t write you a letter — but they’ll give you the gist.
5. 🏗️ Look for Ongoing Development Nearby
Is the land surrounded by government infrastructure like:

An airport or rail project?
That land might be earmarked for future use — and you won’t be compensated.
6. 🧾 Ask for the Beacon Number
If the land has been surveyed, the beacon number will help:

7. 📠 Do a Land Charting Search (Lagos/Ogun)
Visit the Surveyor General’s Office or use their online charting tools if available.
